We'll take you behind the scenes on Marvel attempting to copy the success of DC Comics’ Super Friends with Spider-Man, Iceman, and Firestar! We'll dive into NBC’s weird demands and the contractual rights issues that led to the creation of Firestar and her dog Ms. Lion! This week we head back into the Marvel Versus Marvel Archive to explore the history of The Punisher, and how he went from a one-off Spider-Man villain to becoming one of Marvel’s BIGGEST stars! We’ll dive into all the different influences that came together to create The Punisher - from The Godfather, to Death Wish, to Don Pendleton’s “The Executioner”! Back in 1993 Carolco Pictures hired James Cameron to write the screenplay for their upcoming Spider-Man movie! The 90's were a bad decade for Marvel's Mutants, and it took some seismic changes and bold creative risks to save the franchise, the biggest being the 2001 reboot of the franchise - Ultimate X-Men! Marvel Comics hit the reset button and created a brand new imagining of Xavier, Magneto, Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, and the rest of the X-Men’s huge cast of characters. Mark Millar and Andy Kubert re-imagined Marvel’s mutants and positioned them in the middle of a world in the shadow of the 9/11 attacks and waging a war that violated a lot of personal rights. Social and political satire wrapped up in a sci-fi package!
